Nine plumbing trucks and one password everybody knew

Every tablet in the fleet signed in as the same user, so a plumber who left on bad terms kept the schedule in his pocket. Named accounts and a device register closed that off.

This shows the kind of work we do. It is not a client engagement, and the business in it is invented.

Where it started

The problem

The password was the company's founding year followed by an exclamation mark. Every tablet in every truck used it.

When a plumber left in March, he could still see the schedule and every customer's gate code from his phone. Nobody knew until a customer mentioned he'd called them directly.

What changed

What we did

Each tech now has a named account with multi-factor sign-in, and the tablets are enrolled in device management. When someone leaves, one switch in the office takes every app away from them.

All twenty-two devices went into an asset register with a warranty date against each. Two tablets were cracked and out of warranty, so they were replaced before the summer rush instead of during it.

The company's domain went on dark-web monitoring. Within a month it turned up the office manager's address in a breach from a retailer she'd shopped with, alongside a password she'd reused on the supplier portal.

It runs as a monthly managed contract. Techs ring the help desk from the truck about twice a week, mostly about the tablet printer.
