A boutique hotel where the guest Wi-Fi and the card machines stopped sharing a network
Card terminals sat on the same network as every guest laptop, and the room phones hung off a basement PBX nobody serviced. We separated one and replaced the other.
This shows the kind of work we do. It is not a client engagement, and the business in it is invented.
- 3networks where there had been one, with card terminals on their own
- 42room phones moved off the basement PBX onto hosted voice
- 0voicemails left over from the last guest for the next one to hear
Where it started
The problem
Forty-two rooms and a restaurant, all on one network. The card terminals at the front desk shared Wi-Fi with every guest's laptop, which is exactly what a payment-card assessment looks for first.
The phones were on their last legs too: a copper PBX in the basement, handsets in every room, and a maintenance contract with a company that no longer picked up.
What changed
What we did
Guests now have a network to themselves. Staff have another, and the card terminals sit on a third that can reach the card processor and nothing else. The next PCI self-assessment had a clean answer to the question that used to worry them.
Guest Wi-Fi got a proper sign-in page and per-room bandwidth limits, so one guest streaming in 4K can't take the whole floor down.
The PBX came out. Room phones run on hosted voice tied to the property-management system, so check-in switches a room phone on and check-out wipes its voicemail.
We look after all of it monthly, and we're on call for the two weekends a year when weddings fill every room.
